Comprehensive Health and Nutrition Empowerment in Velhe

Access to quality healthcare remains a significant challenge for rural and peri-urban communities in India. Primary Health Centers (PHCs), the first point of contact for many, often lack critical infrastructure such as beds, clean delivery rooms, and reliable electricity. Additionally, irregular availability of doctors, paramedics, medicines, and equipment hampers service delivery, leading to poor care quality. In 2022, inadequate care quality contributed to 1.6 million deaths in India—nearly twice as many as those caused by lack of healthcare access.

The health system in Velhe faces similar challenges, including poor infrastructure, shortages of trained medical professionals, and unreliable power supply, which undermine the effectiveness of rural healthcare facilities. As a result, the community suffers from limited access to essential healthcare services, while frequent power outages disrupt critical healthcare functions, such as vaccine storage and emergency care.

The Comprehensive Health Camp aims to bridge this healthcare gap by deploying mobile healthcare units offering diagnostic, preventive, and curative services. The project also incorporates nutritional empowerment through Backyard Kitchen Gardens (BKG) and health awareness training to ensure long-term community well-being.

Through collaboration with the Health Within Reach Foundation and Krishi Vigyan Kendra, the initiative leverages innovative MedTech solutions and local agricultural expertise to tackle immediate health concerns and foster sustainable health practices.

By addressing both healthcare accessibility and nutrition security, Raintree Foundation strives to empower the community to access quality healthcare and create a sustainable, health-conscious environment.

Stakeholder Profile:

  • Total Beneficiaries: 1,255
  • Gender Distribution: 599 females, 656 males
  • Age Range: 18–65 years

Problem Statement:

India, despite its economic progress, faces severe challenges in healthcare accessibility. Approximately 75% of the country’s healthcare infrastructure, medical workforce, and resources are concentrated in urban areas, leaving rural communities underserved. This imbalance, combined with the dual burden of infectious and non-communicable diseases, creates significant health challenges for rural populations.

In Velhe, inadequate healthcare infrastructure, a shortage of trained medical professionals, and unreliable power supply exacerbate the situation, leading to suboptimal healthcare delivery. These challenges are further compounded by low community engagement, poor sanitation, and widespread nutritional deficiencies.

Objectives:

  • To enhance the accessibility of quality healthcare services in rural Velhe.
  • To promote nutritional awareness and empower households to establish sustainable food sources.
  • To enable the community to make informed decisions about their health and adopt healthier lifestyles.
  • To foster a health-conscious, resilient community through training and sustained interventions.

Approach:

The project aims to provide last-mile healthcare by partnering with Health Within Reach Foundation and using tech-enabled mobile units offering diagnostic, preventive, and curative services. These units are staffed with an MBBS doctor, dentist, and equipped with diagnostic tools like ECG and blood sugar tests to serve underserved communities. In addition, the project promotes nutrition security through Backyard Kitchen Gardens (BKG), providing households with seeds, gardening kits, training, and support, alongside nutrition workshops and wellness sessions to ensure holistic community well-being.

Key Activities:

  1. Community Engagement: A two-day mobilization campaign to raise awareness and encourage participation.
  2. Health Camp Organization: Diagnostic health data collection for beneficiaries through health camps.
  3. Training on Health, Nutrition, and Well-being: Providing nutritional education and yoga sessions.
  4. Backyard Kitchen Garden (BKG) Setup: Supporting households in establishing BKGs for sustainable nutrition.
  5. Continuous Monitoring: Regular health camps to monitor health improvements, detect diseases early, and provide necessary interventions.
  6. Power Supply Support: Ensuring reliable electricity for medical services such as vaccine storage and emergency care.

Measurement and Monitoring:

To track progress and ensure program success, the following indicators will be monitored:

  1. Number of participants in diagnostic camps.
  2. Reduction in health issues like anemia among female participants.
  3. Number of functional BKGs established in households.
  4. Knowledge increase in health, nutrition, and family planning, measured through surveys and interviews.
