Growing Green Together!
The Avenue Plantation project has made remarkable strides in enhancing biodiversity, community resilience and environmental sustainability across the villages in Velhe, in the Northern Western Ghats of Maharashtra. The recent plantation drive in Ghavar village highlights the profound impact of these efforts, showcasing the importance of collaborative action for both ecological restoration and community empowerment.
In Ghavar, over 170 indigenous tree saplings were planted, with active participation from 68 local community members. This event not only improved the local landscape but also reinforced the Foundation’s commitment to involving local communities in conservation efforts. Local officials, including the Tehsildar and Block Development Officers, lent their support, emphasizing the value of partnerships in achieving sustainable environmental goals.
The project focuses on planting native species that are ecologically compatible and culturally significant to the communities. In this phase, 56 different species, including Aamba, Jambhul and Sita-Ashok, were chosen based on local ecological conditions and community preferences. These trees provide habitat for wildlife, improve biodiversity, and enhance soil water retention—critical in a region vulnerable to climate variability.
Scientific Approach and Data-Driven Insights
The success of this initiative is driven by rigorous field surveys, geo-tagging and continuous monitoring. The on-field data collection included assessments of tree survival rates, plant health, and growth, ensuring that each sapling thrives in its environment. This scientific approach has resulted in survival rates exceeding 75%.
Challenges and Lessons Learned
While the project has seen great success, challenges such as water scarcity, climate variability, and land tenure issues have impacted certain plantation sites. The Foundation is addressing these through recommendations like enhanced site selection, sustainable water management, and long-term maintenance plans.
Looking Forward: Expanding Impact
The Avenue Plantation Initiative is poised for expansion, with plans to involve private landowners, scale operations and strengthen partnerships with government agencies. By fostering local engagement and sustainable practices, this initiative will continue to drive environmental and community resilience in Maharashtra.
